Wellness and self-help

Living with schizophrenia can create very high levels of stress for everyone involved. For people with schizophrenia, stress can even cause symptoms to flare up. And for caregivers, the mental and physical pressure could be difficult.

However, adopting healthy lifestyle habits can have a positive effect on both symptoms and general well-being. Here's a simple checklist to help make sure you check in with yourself on a regular basis:

Keep a journal

When you're struggling with negative feelings, keeping a journal can help you figure out the cause. And once you know what's causing the stress, you can make a plan to address it.

Stay connected with others

Social connections make us feel stronger and less stressed out. Make a point of talking with a friend or family member on a regular basis.

Exercise

Physical activity not only makes us feel good, but it gives us the strength and energy to keep going. Even a few 10‑minute sessions a day will make a difference.

Watch what you eat

Eating whole, healthy foods will make you feel better. That means avoiding processed foods, sugars and carbs, which can make you tired and moody.

Have fun

Be sure to take a little time for yourself each day. Being playful and doing the things you enjoy can help your overall health.

Time for relaxation

Try meditation, yoga or mindfulness. Whatever lets you let go of stress will help you maintain balance in everyday life.
